In 2021, Ang Chiew Teng, ex-Teaching Fellow from Teach For Malaysia, founded Impian Kencana with a couple of passionate working adults and students. She decided to start this non-profit organization to provide underprivileged children with a golden (Kencana) opportunity to achieve their dreams (Impian), hence, the name.
As someone who had once been a part of the B40 community, she seeks to pay it forward with her project, by giving the same opportunity to those who have been in the same shoes via the strongest change of all: education.
The pioneer project would be known as Pendidikan 360°, a 10-week workshop where students pick up a variety of soft skills (such as Google Workspace and Canva) and cultivate a resilient mindset that tackles real-life problems. The culmination would be an educational programme that is “360 degrees”, one that equips B40 kids with an industry-demanded skillset that completes their education.
"With the mindset of B40 kids, it can be very difficult to change them. Out of the 25 kids, we work with, we may only help five students, or maybe even just one. But at least we change someone’s life, and that is my aspiration.“
Pendidikan 360° was the very first workshop organised exclusively by Impian Kencana in 2021 to bring quality skills-based education to teenagers aged 15 to 20 categorised under the B40 community.
This 10-week workshop is specially curated with modules designed around soft skills relevant to the current working environment through project-based learning.
Throughout the programme, each student will be assigned a mentor to assist with their development, both in learning as well as character-building.
Students explore their inner capabilities through creative and collaborative problem-solving of real-life practical issues.
Students are nurtured toward a growth mindset that embraces challenges and a desire to learn outside their comfort zone, with a role model as a reference.
Students will develop strong practical skill sets suitable for any future career pathway to supplement their ordinary schooling experience.
